Check out this incredible project that is inspired by Shark Tank. Included in this large packet, you will find directions for the teacher, directions for the students, challenge sheet with an explanation hook, templates for each stage of the invention and advertisement process and a clear rubric to convey expectation. Presented in a fun and student-friendly format, students will create an invention, whether real or not, will discuss the need for the invention and then create an advertisement to hook buyers. It is intended to take five days, with clear expectations for each day, as each lesson scaffolds on the next. Students will love applying their learned concepts of supply and demand, needs and wants, and helping people make their lives easier through their inventions. One of our favorites :)

Aligned with Leader In Me's idea go beginning with the end in mind, this interactive and student-centered research projects, pushes students to think through some of the details of their next steps. Pushing students being just saying they want to be an NFL player or a police officer, this week long project pushes students through a variety of areas of research focusing on what they want to be when the grow up, where they want to go to college, the various expenses affiliated with living on your own in college, the expenses of living in a certain area, and then the necessary grades and other components that colleges look for. Using websites like glassdoor.com and various college websites will massively support students with this project. Hopefully their findings ground them in what their next steps look like and push them to apply math skills, research skills, reading skills, and ultimately help plan for their future!

Being transparent with students on the standard of assessment and grades is a great way to implement high expectations as well as set them up to be successful. This rubric includes four major components of oral fluency in any regard, whether it be an oral presentation, reading, group work or any other context. These components include expression and volume, phrasing, smoothness, and pace. Each component includes a possibility of four points totaling 16 points total. That number can then be multiplied by 6.25 to place it out of 100. This is a great way to hold your students accountable and document assessment to allow for reflection and improvement and a skill that is highly necessary and often neglected.
